A day in reverse

When all the stars lit up the sky like little lanterns, tired moms and dads were preparing their children for bed after a long day of work.

_____ was already in bed, tucked in with his precious blue blanket and holding his favorite plush toy in his little hands.

While reading him a fairy tale, ____ mom found it difficult to stay awake.

____ was not even listening. He was thinking about what it would be like for everything to exist in reverse, at least for a day.

What if adults became kids…

…and kids became adults?

He fantasized about how cool it would be to eat only chocolate for breakfast instead of boring milk porridge.

“Ugh… porridge,” thought _____.

“If I was a parent, I would only feed my children candy and chocolate!”

While _____ did not like porridge, he liked cleaning up his toys after playing with them even less.

____ dreamed of how cool it would be to leave his toys wherever he wished and play whenever he wanted.

He became so excited, imagining the perfect day “in reverse” as thoughts flew through his head, one by one.

“No brushing teeth and unlimited cartoons! I would let our dog inside the house and…”

No sooner had _____ begun his last thought then he drifted off to sleep, dreaming sweet dreams.

His mom noticed and kissed him on the forehead.

Switching off the table lamp before leaving the room.

In the morning, _____ opened his eyes and was immediately surprised that no one had woken him up.

He jumped out of bed and ran to find his parents.

When he entered the living room, he noticed his mom and dad were awake, and they were watching cartoons.

“_____” said Mom. “You finally woke up. I am starving!”

“Me too!” Dad chimed in.

_____ could not believe his eyes; his wildest dream had come true! He was an adult, and his parents were kids!

He quickly ran to the kitchen and stood on a chair…

…and fetched some chocolate from the far-away shelf where Mom always hid candy.

He brought the treats to Mom and Dad, who was in the midst of grabbing all the toys they could find in the toybox.

_____ became so happy, suddenly remembering their outdoor dog his mom never allowed inside.

He ran to the door and called out to the dog…

…who then barged into the house, leaving huge, dirty paw prints everywhere.

“Mom!” shouted _____. “The dog just made a big mess. Come clean it up!”

Suddenly, _ remembered that all the adult’s work was now his. With a sigh, he went to find a mop to clean up after the dog.

Suddenly, _ heard screaming coming from the other room. It was Dad.

_____ went back to the room and saw that the dog had chewed on a few toys and eyed the plate with chocolate on it.

“Oh no!!!” _____ shouted.

Suddenly, the dog grabbed a large piece of chocolate in its mouth…

…and ran to the door.

_____ went running after him but tripped over a toy that was lying on the floor and fell down.

As he tried to stand up, he heard his mom’s voice call out from the kitchen.

“_____, my tooth hurts!”

Looking at his mom, _____ remembered that Dad had always warned him not to eat too much candy since it could hurt his teeth.

_____ closed his eyes, now realizing just how complicated adulthood is the need to always remember what’s “good” and what’s “bad.”

Suddenly, _____ heard a sound. he opened his eyes…

…and saw his mom standing next to his bed. “Wake up, _____! We don’t want to be late for kindergarten.”

“Just a dream, “sighed _____. “Just a dream.”
